Australian Capital Territory

Surrounded in whole by New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory is home to Australia’s capital city, Canberra. The Australian Capital Territory, along with its’ capital city, came into being in 1911 after much discussion and debate; a dispute started, at the time of Australia’s Federation, between Melbourne and Sydney as to which city would be named Australia’s capital city. Eventually it was decided that neither city would be chosen and that, as a solution to the problem at hand, the Australian Capital Territory would be, and was, created.

Located along the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, the name Canberra means, “meeting place” in the local aboriginal tongue. This capital city is a fantastic combination of culture, history and modern buzz. Home to national museums, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, as well as a variety of first-class restaurants and chic cafes, a trip to Canberra offers visitors the opportunity to partake in a variety of interesting and entertaining activities. With much of the Australian Capital Territory consisting of National Parks, there are numerous opportunities for outdoor activities.

Just a short drive south of Canberra is the Namadgi National Park. Here visitors can take in the breathtaking views, see Aboriginal rock art, go hiking, enjoy rock climbing and spend time camping in the great outdoors. The Australian flora and fauna abound, adding to the visitor’s experience.

Just a short drive north of Canberra is the small town of Hall. This quaint town houses some of the areas greatest wineries, which continually produce award-winning wines, and are well worth a wine-tasting trip. Browsing through the local markets allows visitors to take a look at, and perhaps even buy, some of the local art, crafts or produce; combined with wine-tasting and a good meal makes for a perfect day, or weekend, trip.

With so much to offer, the Australian Capital Territory is a great choice of destination.
