Northern Territory
Often referred to as Australia’s real outback, Australia’s Northern Territory is a land of red desert sands, tropical cities and breathtaking views.
Darwin, the Northern Territory’s capital city is a friendly, multicultural, tropical city with a lot to offer. With a warm tropical climate, this Australian capital city offers both an adventurous and relaxing outdoor-lifestyle.
Every August people from all around come to enjoy the Darwin Festival, while each July people participate in the Darwin Beer Can Regatta; the race is open to anyone, and everyone, as long as their boat is made from beer or soda cans. Darwin’s cultural diversity allows for restaurants with tasty treats from all around the world, while the open-air markets release a mixture of pleasant aromas. A three and a half hour drive south of Darwin will place travellers, looking to escape the city, in the Katherine region.
Located along the Katherine River, Katherine is a, somewhat, remote area. A trip to Katherine is perfect for those looking to go canoeing, do some bird watching, fishing and camping. Equally ideal for these activities is the Northern Territory’s Tennant Creek and surrounding areas. Additionally, a trip to the Tennant Creek area gives visitors the opportunity to see the Devils Marbles; the Devils Marbles are huge, round boulder formations and, as a sacred site, are of great importance to the local Aboriginal people.
Travelling further south places visitors in the heart of central Australia. Surrounded by red sands is the Northern Territory’s second-largest town, Alice Springs. A trip to Alice Springs Desert Park allows visitors the chance to see some of the areas local wildlife, as well as an insight and new respect for desert life. Approximately 460 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs is Uluru, or Ayers Rock.
Standing 348 metres high, Uluru is a massive red rock formation, which has great cultural significance to the local Aboriginal people. The traditional landowners happily give tours of this magnificent landmark and even share intriguing stories.
The Northern Territory is a place of beauty and intrigue, and is truly Australia’s real outback.
